Oppdatering tirsdag 17.mars: Cinemateket er i dialog med andre aktører om alternative visningssteder, hvor vi kan vise våre filmer fremover. En oppdatering og mer info om dette vil komme i løpet av de nærmeste dagene.

Tromsø kommune, som eier Verdensteatret har de siste ukene gjort en omfattende kartlegging av det verneverdige bygget. Etter en grundig vurdering viser det seg at kinosalen må stenges umiddelbart av sikkerhetsmessige årsaker. Verdensteatret kafé vil fortsatt holde åpent som normalt.

– Det er funnet noen skader på takkonstruksjonen som gjør at kinosalen må stenges midlertidig, sier prosjektleder i Tromsø kommune Jan Harald Fredheim.

Stiftelsen Tromsø internasjonale filmfestival (TIFF) er leietaker av hele Verdensteatret og drifter bygget til daglig i samarbeid med kommunen. Verdensteatret drives som cinematek med daglige filmvisninger og arrangementer.

– Det er svært uheldig at vi må stenge på så kort varsel, men sikkerheten må selvsagt prioriteres, sier leder i TIFF, Lisa Hoen.

– Vi må bare beklage til publikum og samarbeidspartnere at kinosalen stenges midlertidig. Publikum vil få sine billetter refundert, og vi vil komme tilbake med nærmere informasjon over helga.

TIFF er i dialog med Tromsø kommune angående renovering av bygget. Tromsø kommune vil allerede mandag gå videre for å se på en plan for utbedring av taket. På nåværende tidspunkt er det for tidlig å si noe om hvor lenge kinosalen vil være stengt.

Updated 17 March: The cinematheque is currently working on finding alternative venues for our upcoming program. We're hopeful to have some more information on this within the next few days!

Tromsø Municipality, who owns Verdensteatret, has been conducting an extensive survey of the building in the last few weeks.. After a thorough assessment, it appears that the cinema must be closed temporarily for safety reasons. The café will continue to be open as usual.

- Some damage has been found in the roof structure, which means that the cinema must be closed temporaily, says project manager in Tromsø Municipality Jan Harald Fredheim.

The Foundation Tromsø International Film Festival (TIFF) is the tenant of the entire Verdensteatret and operates the building on a daily basis in collaboration with the municipality. Verdensteatret is operated as a cinemateque with daily film screenings and events.

- It is very unfortunate that we have to close at such a short notice, but safety must of course be a priority, says TIFF leader, Lisa Hoen.

- We can only apologize tot he audience and partners that the cinema is closed. The audience will recieve a refund for their tickets, and we will return with more information.

TIFF is in dialogue with Tromsø Municipality regarding the renovation of the building, and they will move forward on Monday to look at a plan for repairing the ceiling. At this time, it is too early to say how long the cinema will be closed.
