Metropolis by Fritz Lang has had an enormous influence on science fiction and all kinds of dystopian visions of the future in film, literature, and visual art. With gigantic sets constructed at the UFA studios outside Berlin and in an expressionist visual style, Lang conjured a haunting vision of a sterile and inhuman society of the future.

In the futuristic city of Metropolis, the dictator Fredersen attempts to incite the workers to revolution and self-destruction with the help of the mad scientist Rotwang, who is eager to replace them with robots. Rotwang kidnaps the workers’ leader Maria and replaces her with an identical-looking robot who sows division among the workers underground. But Fredersen’s son has fallen in love with Maria and descends into the subterranean Metropolis to find her.

The screenplay was written by Thea von Harbou together with Lang. Later, he distanced himself from the film, possibly because Joseph Goebbels and Adolf Hitler admired it. Von Harbou later entered the service of the Nazis and divorced Lang, who fled to the United States in 1934.

The digital restoration of the film was carried out by Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in Wiesbaden and Deutsche Kinemathek – Museum für Film und Fernsehen in Berlin in collaboration with Museo del Cine Pablo C. Ducros Hicken in Buenos Aires.

The film is screened with English intertitles.

The Music

When Kjetil Schjander Luhr and Kristin Bolstad decided to create new music for Metropolis, it was with the idea of playfully borrowing from 100 years of film and music inspired by the movie, and then feeding what they found back into Metropolis. Blade Runner, Kraftwerk, Japanese anime, and even Babylon Berlin were among the ingredients simmering in the pot.

Fritz Langs Metropolis har hatt en enorm innflytelse på science fiction og alle slags dystopiske framtidsvisjoner innen film, litteratur og billedkunst. Men Fredersens sønn er blitt forelsket i Maria og begir seg ned i det underjordiske Metropolis for å finne henne.

Manus til filmen ble skrevet av Thea von Harbou sammen med Lang. I ettertid tok han avstand fra filmen, noe som kan ha hatt sammenheng med at Goebbels og Hitler elsket den. Von Harbou gikk senere i nazistenes tjeneste og ble skilt fra Lang, som flyktet til USA i 1934.

Da Kjetil Schjander Luhr og Kristin Bolstad bestemte seg for å lage ny musikk til Metropolis var det med en idé om å låne lekent fra 100 år med film og musikk inspirert av filmen, for så å putte det de fant tilbake inn i Metropolis. Blade Runner, Giorgio Moroders Metropolis-musikk fra 1984, Kraftwerk, japansk tegnefilm og til og med Babylon Berlin var noen av ingrediensene som fikk koke i gryta.
