The Cinematheque and the University of Tromsø host a special screening of Hidden Figures, followed by a panel discussion.

Hidden Figures is the incredible and untold story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn, and Mary Jackson.

Three brilliant women who worked at NASA, and who were the brains behind one of the greatest achievements in history: the launch of the spacecraft that carried astronaut John Glenn, making him the first American to orbit the Earth. It was a remarkable accomplishment that restored the nation’s confidence, turned the Space Race against the Soviet Union, and amazed the entire world. This visionary trio defied all gender and racial prejudices and inspired generations to dream big.

The film is shown in collaboration with UiT The Arctic University of Norway, and there will be a panel discussion after the screening.

The under-representation of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) areas at university remains a persistent issue across all career levels, from students to researchers and professors. This disparity becomes increasingly pronounced at higher qualification levels. At the same time, it is widely recognized that true excellence in academia—and more generally in our society—can only be achieved through diversity and inclusion. We use the movie Hidden Figures as a starting point to discuss the issues related to gender balance, diversity, and inclusion in STEM.

Participating in the panel discussion are Lluïsa Puig Moner (PhD student at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics - UiT), Veronica Lachi (Associate Professor at the Department of Physics and Technology - UiT) and Sarah Martiny (Full Professor of Social and Community Psychology at the Department of Psychology - UiT).
