Vi kjenner Walt Disney som skaperen av klassikere som Snehvit og Jungelboken, men karrieren hans startet litt annerledes. I løpet av 1920-tallet produserte en ung Walt Disney over nitti korte stumfilmer. Disse verkene etablerte ham som en pionér innen den amerikanske animasjonsindustrien, der han stadig eksperimenterte med historiefortelling, karakterutvikling og nye animasjonsteknikker. Under årets stumfilmdager viser vi seks av disse verkene fra Disneys tidlige karriere, med filmer fra Alice Comedies, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit og Mikke Mus.

Walt Disney vokste opp i en tid preget av stor kulturell og teknologisk utvikling. En av hans første animasjonsfilmer som åpnet dørene til Hollywood var Alice’s Wonderland (1923), der han kombinerte levende bilder og animasjon. Her møter vi en liten jente som drømmer seg bort i en fantasirik animasjonsverden. Noen år senere kom Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (1927). Filmene ble en stor suksess, men eventyret endte brått da han mistet rettighetene til figuren. Dette førte imidlertid til at han skapte karakteren Mikke Mus (1928), og sammen med animatøren Ub Iwerks videreutviklet han teknikker som har dannet grunnlaget for en varig animasjonsarv.

Musikken

Kristin Bolstad (f. 1981) er komponist, sanger og lydkunstner med et stort og allsidig virkefelt. Med vokal, effekter og en rekke uortodokse instrumenter og gjenstander, gir hun liv til stumfilmene hun akkompagnerer. Ved siden av å lage musikk, lydeffekter og live foley til stumfilmer jobber også Kristin med bestillingsverk og stedsspesifikke musikkverk, opptrer med vokal kvintetten Stemmeklang og en rekke andre ensemblet og konstellasjoner. Kristin ga nylig ut albumet Gje meg fred som utforsker grenselandet mellom kunstmusikk, jazz, alternativ pop og visesang.

Kjetil Schjander Luhr er komponist, pianist og lyddesigner. I tillegg til arbeid for film, TV og teater har han vært fast stumfilmmusiker ved Cinemateket i Oslo siden 2001. Under Luhrs ledelse får filmene en musikalsk drakt som favner både 20-tallets musikalske klisjeer og inspirasjon, så vel som stilarter og teknikker fra nyere filmhistorie. I Luhrs filmmusikalske univers er det likevel alltid historiefortellingen og filmens egne premisser som har forrang — målet er et lydspor som får deg til å glemme at filmen er stum.

We know Walt Disney as the creator of classics such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and The Jungle Book, but his career began somewhat differently. During the 1920s, a young Walt Disney produced more than ninety short silent films. These works established him as a pioneer in the American animation industry, where he continually experimented with storytelling, character development, and new animation techniques. During this year’s Silent Film Days, we are screening six of these works from Disney’s early career, featuring films from the Alice Comedies, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, and Mickey Mouse series.

Walt Disney grew up in a time marked by great cultural and technological development. One of his first animated films to open the doors to Hollywood was Alice's Wonderland (1923), in which he combined live action and animation. Here, we meet a young girl who dreams herself away into an imaginative animated world. A few years later came Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (1927). The films were a great success, but the adventure came to an abrupt end when he lost the rights to the character. This, however, led him to create Mickey Mouse (1928), and together with animator Ub Iwerks he further developed techniques that have formed the foundation of a lasting animation legacy.

The Music

Kristin Bolstad (b. 1981) is a composer, singer, and sound artist with a broad and versatile field of work. Using voice, effects, and a range of unconventional instruments and objects, she brings the silent films she accompanies to life. In addition to creating music, sound effects, and live foley for silent films, Kristin also works with commissioned pieces and site-specific music projects. She performs with the vocal quintet Stemmeklang and a number of other ensembles and constellations. Kristin recently released the album Gje meg fred, which explores the borderland between contemporary art music, jazz, alternative pop, and singer-songwriter traditions.

Kjetil Schjander Luhr is a Norwegian composer, pianist and sound designer. In addition to working on film, television and he’s been a regular silent film musician at the Cinematheque in Oslo since 2001. At the hands of Luhr films are revamped with a fresh musical expression that includes the grand clichés of the 1920s as well as inspiring takes on styles and techniques from modern film history. In his musical universe the film’s storytelling and premise are always in focus, and the goal is to have the live soundtrack make you forget that the film was ever silent!

Tickets

Members of the Children's Film Society (Tromsø Barnefilmklubb) have free admission to the screening, but most collect at ticket.

Otherwise standard ticket sales apply, and if you have a festival pass for Silent Film Days the screening is included, but remember to collect a free ticket.
